The science coming from the IPCC’s latest instalment of their AR6 synthesis report isn’t anything we haven’t heard before, but the new summary forces us to face the grim conclusions of our human contribution to climate change. There is, however, still hope that we can improve our prospects if we act now, and act as a collective. Explore the IPCC’s key points in our Climate Action Countdown.

GHGs have unequivocally caused climate change
The evidence is clear. Human activities have led to the increased release of greenhouse gas emissions, which have caused global surface temperatures to rise by 1.1°C (2°F).
Adverse impacts have hit hard and will only get worse
Every degree of warming will intensify extreme weather events and escalate existing risks such as water scarcity and declining agricultural production, which can have devastating consequences if allowed to progress.

We’re progressing, but not enough
Despite progress across all sectors, adaptation gaps still exist and global financial challenges are limiting mitigation options especially in developing countries.
The losses are mounting
Severe impacts to vulnerable communities are almost always irreversible and devastating. More funding is needed to ensure those experiencing loss and damage can recover and adapt.

More emissions, more warming, more damage
Forecasts have estimated that temperatures will keep rising to 1.5°C (2.7°C) in the near term. Only deep, rapid and sustained reductions in greenhouse gas emissions will slow down global warming and reduce the intensity and multiplicity of concurrent hazards.
We need to ditch Dirty Energy
Reducing carbon emissions now is critical to capping the temperature rise and avoiding the risks that come with every degree over target. The fastest way there is total removal of the highest contributor to global GHG emissions, burning fossil fuels.
