In their March Budget, the UK government announced key decisions on the design of the Plastic Packaging Tax ahead of its commencement in April 2022. This included extending the scope of the tax to plastic packaging which has been filled before being imported into the UK (i.e. bottles which are filled with liquid).

Alongside the Budget announcement, the UK government launched a consultation to provide more information on the tax design and seek views from stakeholders. As a result of the coronavirus / COVID-19, the government extended the consultation period by 3 months, with a new closing date of 20 August 2020.
The tax will impact a wide range of industries including retail, construction and manufacturing. You can find out more information about how the tax might affect you in the consultation document. If you are a Business Representative Organisation or Trade Association we would encourage you to share this information with your members to ensure they have the opportunity to engage fully in the consultation.
