Climate change is an enormously divisive issue. It has skeptics and activists alike, with numerous global studies still attempting to accurately ascertain mankind’s impact upon the environment. Increased global temperatures, melting polar icecaps, and multiple anthropological declines have all been intrinsically related to increased carbon dioxide (CO2) contents in the earth’s atmosphere.

Forecasts about the future impact of humanity’s pollutive output vary wildly, but there is a general international consensus in favor of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and prioritizing sustainability to curb the problems facing our environment.

This article will explore how gas analyzers can be applied in multiple research areas to support environmental efforts worldwide.

Atmospheric Gas Reaction Kinetics Gas Analyzers

Understanding global warming and its ramifications requires an expert knowledge of gas reaction kinetics. At their highest point, atmospheric pollutants such as CO2 and carbon monoxide (CO) are linked to upper ozone degradation and an increase in adverse weather conditions across the world. Closer to the ground, pollutants cloy breathable air in urban environments with multiple harmful effects on human health and wellbeing.

The HPR-60 MBMS gas analyzer is a molecular beam mass spectrometer capable of analyzing reactive gas phase intermediates at atmospheric pressure levels. It is routinely used for environmental monitoring processes and can establish benchmarks for safe air compositions.

Gas Analyzers for CVD Solar Cells

Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is a leading method of formulating thin film materials for a limitless range of applications, supporting industrial growth in spectrometry, display technology, and alternative energies. Organic photovoltaics (OPVs), or solar cells, are one of the preferred sources of sustainable energy. They are manufactured through CVD processes to create nanostructures capable of absorbing photons of light and converting them into electrical currents. Conventional materials are not efficient enough to effectively supplant or challenge established energy sources – but new CVD methods using emerging materials have enabled OPVs capable of absorbing light on the near-infrared spectra of light. These breakthrough technologies typically rely on precise gas analyzers to support process development and monitoring on CVD procedures.

Environmental Monitoring with Gas Analyzers

Pollution monitoring is a crucial process for environmental studies, as numerous areas of research require consistent, realistic understandings of our current ecological condition. Gas analyzers equipped to measure volatile compounds at concentrations as low as the sub-parts per million (ppm) level have encouraging applications in the field of seawater pollution monitoring, providing accurate insights into marine pollution levels and characterization.

Hiden Analytical’s HPR-40 DSA with membrane inlet technology, MIMS enables researchers to analyze with sub-parts per billion detection levels.

Gas Analyzers for Biogas Research

Biogas research is a rapidly growing field, with multidisciplinary interest from across the world. It has the potential to supply a new stream of sustainable energy, by processing various organic materials and harnessing their methane-rich effluent gases as a viable fuel. Residual materials from the processes can be further recycled to support the sustainable efforts of the emerging energy industry.

Multiple Hiden Analytical gas analyzers can be used to support biogas research, including the QIC BioStream gas analyzer is a multi-stream gas composition monitor designed for fermentation monitoring, with real-time quantification of gases and vapors at a concentration range of 0.1 ppm – 100%.

Industrial work environments are certainly some of the most hazardous. Not only can they have significant impacts on their surrounding environments, but they also pose a very real and serious threat to employees.
