Working alongside BAM Nuttall’s environmental experts, ESG developed a training module that provided an overview to the regulatory frameworks and the science behind soil characterisation, as well as waste classification, if required. This combined approach provided clear and pragmatic guidance for BAM Nuttall’s project teams with the aim to: increase the reuse of surplus soils; reduce the volume of soils disposed of as a waste; and reduce the risk of misclassification due to incorrect laboratory testing.
As BAM Nuttall, one of the UK’s largest civil engineering contractors, has projects nationwide, it was decided that a webinar would be the best way for ESG to incorporate their guidance within BAM Nuttall’s own internal training programme. With this approach, ESG had the opportunity to quickly and efficiently communicate the subject matter to a broad spectrum of BAM Nuttall’s decision makers and, in turn, help to meet BAM Nuttall’s training objectives.
Following the close collaboration between BAM’s environmental team and ESG’s contaminated land specialists, the webinar was presented by ESG’s Charlotte Reeve (UK operations manager) and Neil Brown (principal environmental scientist), with questions and scenarios provided by BAM Nuttall’s Edwin Lowe (environment advisor).
Philip Ball, group technical director, said: “This is the first time we have provided training to a client in this way and I am delighted with the outcome. The webinar allows BAM to roll the training out to their project teams throughout the UK in an engaging way. We are already looking at our other civil contracts to see who else may benefit from training in a similar format.”
