The s::can spectro::lyser industrial provides the ideal monitoring solution for industries such as food and beverages, galvanic, tanning, pulp and paper, pharmaceutical, textile and many more. At the Oettinger brewery in Germany the spectro::lyser industrial ensures the complete monitoring of the treated water in the brewery’s waste water treatment plant.
Background
With a total output of 245.7 million gallons per year, the Oettinger group is one of the biggest brewery companies in Germany. Each year, about two billion bottles and cans are filled with beer, mixed beers and soft drinks. The family-owned business was founded in 1731. Its headquarters are located in Oettingen, and 1,050 employees work there. Approximately 92.5 million gallons of beer and mixed beer beverages are produced annually at the headquarters production site. This makes the brewery one of the largest brewery locations in Germany. Waste water accumulates through the production of beer and cleaning bottles, which needs to be treated in their own waste water treatment plant.
Challenge
With increased production, waste water has also accumulated. Hence, a WWTP was built in 1992 to relieve the municipal WWTP. From 1992 to 2009, the amount of waste water that had to be cleaned, rose from 1,200 m3/d to 2,700 m3/d, which corresponds to approximately 30,000/99,000 inhabitant equivalents. In addition, the upper legal limit for COD was decreased from 120 mg/l to <60 mg/l. In order to comply with the maximum amounts and to be allowed to discharge the treated waste water directly into the river, the brewery had to install a continuous monitoring system in their waste water effluent.
Solution
The only solution to control treated waste water over a long period of time was to send daily mixed and random samples to an accredited laboratory. In 2004, the Oettinger brewery opted for a more sustainable system. A real-time monitoring system was implemented using s::can’s spectro::lyser, which enables them to react on unusual discharges and limit value exceedances.
Benefits
Readings are available in real-time with the automated measuring spectrometer probe. A one-minute measuring interval is set and an automatic compressed air cleaning system is used to keep the optical measuring element of the probe clean. The availability of the measured values was over 99% last year. Jochen Brantl, sewage works operator at Oettinger’s WWTP, commented: “Due to the online monitoring of the measurements and an early warning system, we were able to decrease the current expenses significantly by minimising personnel efforts and reducing lab samples.“
s::can industrial product range
Industrial waste water is often extreme in its composition, for example high in acids, solids, solvents or detergents or radically changing temperature. The s::can industrial range includes the spectrometer probes spectro::lyser titanium pro and spectro::lyser industrial ATEX as well as sensors such as ph::lyser pro, condu::lyser pro and redo::lyser pro. All products in the industrial range are especially designed for heavy-duty applications. They are extremely resistant on the outside, and contain industrial grade, innovative high-tech on the inside. The diverse range of mounting options and cleaning devices is also unique, which leads to high flexibility in the installation environment.
Many industrial users are especially interested in the optimisation of product-related processes which can be achieved by spectrometry, such as an immediate identification of disruptions in the production process and quick countermeasures. Production costs can be significantly cut through reduction of product loss and operating capital. Additional benefits of 65 s::can industrial are the optimisation of processes and chemical dosing, continuous monitoring of industrial effluents, conformance to compliance regulations and many more.
Background information: About s::can
s::can has given its heart and soul to online water quality measurement. Since its foundation, nothing else has come out of the development department; nothing else has come out of the production sites.
s::can products measure a wide range of parameters in different applications in the areas of drinking water, waste water, environmental monitoring and industrial applications. All products are developed with the same philosophy in mind: s::can measuring instruments are precise, intelligent, robust, and require little or no maintenance.
s::can Messtechnik GmbH was founded in 1999 and is based in Vienna/Austria. With sales offices in six countries and sales partners around the world, s::can measuring systems are available in 45 countries. Today, with close to 10,000 systems sold, s::can is the global leader in online optical water monitoring systems.
